The Shell Center for Sustainability's mission is to foster an interdisciplinary program of research, outreach, and education to address actions that can be taken to ensure the sustainable development of communities' living standards, interpreted broadly, to encompass all factors affecting the overall quality of life.

To better address the unprecedented rate of coastal change along the Gulf of Mexico Coast, Rice University’s Shell Center for Sustainability has created the Gulf Coastal Science Consortium (GCSC). The consortium will host its first workshop at Rice June 28 and 29.

The workshop aims to bring together renowned scientists to identify and evaluate specific Gulf Coast issues. Topics will include sea-level rise, subsidence, sediment supply and hurricane impact.

“This is the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with Gulf Coast scientists to help decision-makers identify a sound scientific basis on issues that affect the Gulf of Mexico,” said John Anderson, academic director of the Shell Center for Sustainability, the W. Maurice Ewing Chair in Oceanography and professor of Earth science. “As we move forward with the work of the consortium, we hope to increase our membership with the best minds researching issues that affect the Gulf Coast and the research institutions that serve the Gulf of Mexico.”

The consortium is dedicated to assessing the state of scientific knowledge about impacts of global change along the coast and conveying this information to policymakers, the media and the general public in hope of encouraging a Gulf-wide coastal sustainability plan. The names and affiliations of the workshop participants can be found here.

Findings by the consortium will be published in professional journals and presented at a postworkshop public presentation.
