The Shell Center for Sustainability's mission is to foster an interdisciplinary program of research, outreach, and education to address actions that can be taken to ensure the sustainable development of communities' living standards, interpreted broadly, to encompass all factors affecting the overall quality of life.

The Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium (RURS) for 2016 was a traditional success. The Shell Center for Sustainability (SCS) was proud to join RURS once again as sponsor of the SCS Sustainable Development Awards. This year’s judges, Dr. Daniel Cohan, Associate Professor, and Lilibeth André, SCS Associate Director, had the difficult job of finding the top research for sustainable development by Rice University undergraduates.

The winners for this year’s awards are:

First Place

Assessment of a Barnacle Bioeroder and its Impact on a Dominant Reef-building Coral from a High Coral Cover Reef, by Rebecca Maher, Natural Sciences.

Second Place

Comparing Benthic Community Diversity on oil Platforms and Natural Reefs in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico, by Elaine Shen, Natural Sciences.

Third Place

Park Improvement Preferences of Under-Surveyed Populations, by Sally Hodges-Copple, Emily Jacobson, and Lucy Maveeva, Social Sciences.

Congratulations to the winners and all who entered their research for consideration.
